New Music Tuesday #33
Sault, Childish Gambino, AOR update and an album review that nobody asked for.
Happy Tuesday!
This one is full of updates, upcoming shows, cool new music and bonus posts. Let’s get to it shall we?
AOR UPDATE
The big news is that we are finally starting the roll out for the Almanac of Rap’s third season on Okayplayer.
Here’s the music video for the theme song.
Exciting! Fun! Not at all anxiety-inducing!
The first episode drops on August 1st and I won’t tell you who the guests are yet but at the moment we’ve got a rapper, a dj, a singer and a producer. ((If you’ve read the newsletters in the past I think I have mentioned them all tho)
SHOWS
Shouting at The Screen is back on July 18th. We got a movie, jokes and drinks. We’ve even got AC. It’s been hot as hell outside everyday so AC is a selling point now. TICKETS
Okayplayer is throwing an Almanac of Rap Launch Party at Our Wicked Lady on July 27th. The party goes from 2p - 6p and Shinobi Shaw and Reborn are spinning. RSVP. The podcast is slated to return in August so it’s go time!
I’m doing a DJ set at Elsewhere with Hannibal Buress aka DJ Burgerfeet on August 1st. I am planning on rapping during my DJ set as well so come through and witness the experiment in real time! TICKETS
And keep your calendars clear on August 3rd. I’m currently in the middle of planning something special with a few homies. I can’t say too much at the moment but it will during the day time into early evening.
And as usual I’ll probably be on Twitch from 2-4pm this coming Wednesday.
NEWS
I would say that it was a pretty slow week for music but I feel like that does a disservice to anyone putting out music cus it’s a big week for them. So it’s not a slow week at all, it’s a week for music enthusiasts to dig into stuff that would usually get overlooked.
Aside from Kendrick dropping the Not Like Us video the biggest news is Donald Glover Childish Gambino prepping the release of his soundtrack final album. He did a show at Little Island in NYC and it seemed pretty cool.
It also looks like he’s in character mode aka wearing the Bando Stone costume at the show. I wonder will he commit to the bit the same way he did on Because The Internet.
During the Little Island takeover he had his Gilga Radio livestream running and debuted a new video as well. It kicks in at like the 35 minute mark.
Essence Fest also happened over the weekend and most of the news I saw surrounding it was that the attendance was low (i think they said the same thing last year), Busta berated the crowd for having low energy (he has done this before) and Lil Wayne didn’t get on stage for the Hot Boys reunion (he has stood on this for a while) which made Birdman call him a ‘pussy ass nigga’.
I dunno tho it still looked kinda fun and I’d go just to be in New Orleans.
VIDEOS
I’m sure you’ve all seen this by now but here it is again in case you need to watch it for the umpteenth time to decode something about it.
Speaking of LA, Blu and Evidence got an album on the way.
RJD2 got a new album on the way and here is a really dope interview about it from the homies over at Cabbages.
Moruf dropped this these visuals shot by Joshua Kissey
Nappy Nina and Swarvy bout to make a masterpiece.
Brady Watt teamed up with Jim Jones and it came out pretty fresh. Fun fact: my uncle is Jim’s lawyer ‘BOWMAN!’ and he is the one who told me to check the video.
Greg Nice dropped a joint. For some reason this song makes me miss Biz Markie
Lyte and Latifah teamed up for a joint. That’s some heavy legacy!
Eminem is preparing to drop an album and this is the second single. You can look up the first one on your own because I am not posting that here lol
ALBUMS
Sault dropped some download only heat in the form of one long mp3 file. You can get it here: WeTransfer Download Link
The good brother Darien Brockington dropped an album that is sure to be some of the most well sung, written and produced heat you’ll hear this week.
I don’t know who Dana and Alden are but they have a few cool features and a pretty cool album.
NappyHIGH been on my radar for a minute and this one goes.
I saw Nappy Nina posting about this Nao Yoshioka feature on her IG so i went and checked the album out and it’s good.
Tinashe is maximizing the moment and I’m not mad at her for it.
SINGLES
Childish Gambino got a new one.
This is classic west coast shit.
If Hit-Boy produces or raps on it, I’m there.
I want to do a post about how black culture is embracing Asian culture embracing black culture but I don’t have the bandwith to research it so it will live in my drafts folder for now.
This shit goes
Kenyon don’t miss
Another new artist for me. I like this song.
BONUS
Long story short when Justin dropped that new album a few months ago I wrote a review for it but never published it because mid review I realized that I should have been reviewing THIS album instead. Then life happened…
Well I finally finished the album review that nobody asked for that should have came on the heels of Cowboy Carter.
I will probably shift these to paid subscribers only sometime in the near future and might even be open to letting people vote on the album I review or taking suggestions.
Okay that’s it for now. Cue Rev Run.
PS - I have a colonoscopy scheduled for the same day as a potential DJ gig for a really cool comedy show. Do I still take the DJ gig or just take it easy? I am not gonna move the colonoscopy cus health is wealth but I want to take the gig cus laughter is the best medicine! What would you do?
(this is really just a test to see who is reading to the bottom of the newsletter lol)
Clear your calendar for the day *before* the colonoscopy (trust!) but you should be fine afterwards as long as you have a couple hours to shake off the anesthetics.
go on and DJ. trust me, you'll be fine.
