New Music Tuesday #80
Little Simz, The Talking Heads, Slum Village and a merch inquiry.
This weekend I figured out how to make a zine out of a single piece of paper and spent the better half of the weekend coloring them. I also turned [REDACTED] years old and while these two things feel like they are in direct contrast to each other they are probably why I don’t look like I am almost a half [REDACTED] years old.
If you bought stop. waiting. you might remember that the album comes with a digital zine designed by SOAP Goods Creative. If you didn’t buy that project you still can! It’s still for sale!
I firmly believe art keeps me broke young and it’s the reason why I try to maintain some sort of creative practice even if it’s invisible to everyone else.
SHOWS
6/14 - I’ll be at Bunton’s World Famous for a Pre-Father’s Day Belated Birthday Late Night DJ set. If you plan on being up past midnight make your way over and take one of my drink tickets!
6/16 - Frankenstein’s Baby will be back at Union Hall and the lineup includes Emmy Blotnick, Johnathan Van Halen, Erin Depke, Rojo Perez and Eva Evans.
NEWS
The biggest news in new music is that Lil Wayne’s album came out and the internet did not like it. Wyclef produced a track featuring Andrea Bocelli and Lin Manuel Miranda brought an elephant into the studio. I don’t hate the album but there isn’t a Lil Wayne album that I would consider to be a personal classic so I don’t have a dog in this fight at all. The album also uses at least one (if not several) AI generated samples which I honestly don’t love.
And speaking of AI, Timbaland has signed an AI artist named TaTa and was immediately met with the type of unified internet backlash that is usually reserved for Beyonce slander. Timbaland has been moving in this direction for a while now and it really makes you wonder if the uncredited singers on his last album were actually people at all.
Sault responded to Little Simz dropping her album with a show announcement. If you haven’t been paying attention they basically funded their first elaborate show with money that was owed to her.
VIDEOS
Little Brother just hit Noochie’s Front Porch and I haven’t seen it yet but I already know it’s a SCORCHER. So dope to see my guys memorialize the stage show so that you never question or forget that they got one of the best stage shows out there.
Amerie’s stopped by Tiny Desk and gave a performance that has ignited a very small fire on the internet. All I’ll say is that she has a very specific voice and I enjoyed it. Also if you’re wondering what she’s been up to she started a book club a while ago.
Talking Heads put out a new video for Psycho Killer and it’s a really dope clip. I think they are about to do a reunion tour or something and if they do I’ll be going.
I really didn’t want to post this but the video is just too good. Watch it on mute if you have to. It’s absurd and unhinged in the best way possible. She’s really good at videos.
I really like The Louvre. It’s one of those songs that I find myself humming at random times during the day. And even tho the video is just rich niggas standing around I have to post it up here to counterbalance that Sabrina Carpenter clip I just posted.
My algorithm has decided that I like PartyOf2 and it is kinda right. They freestyled over the Otis beat and I’m not mad at all about it.
The Artifacts were one of those groups that had a lot of influence on me early on so stumbling upon this trailer for Tame One’s documentary was really cool. It’s full of archival footage and interviews and I can’t wait for it to drop.
ALBUMS
This album is incredible. Inflo prolly heard the opening track and cancelled his subscriptions to every streaming service he had.
Khrysis really laced this T.F album. I only skimmed it but it’s in the queue for this week cus them beats go CRAZY.
This Aesop Rock album is in the queue as well.
This Coyote dude has my attention. I don’t know much about him but I know enough to know that this album gonna have at least like 10 songs on it that I’d like which is enough for me.
Three Dollar Pistol dropped this album which means that I will like it. He’s got a gang of homies on here as well so I’m sold and I haven’t heard any music from it at all.
SONGS
Evidence went crazy on this.
New Slum Village? Hell yes!
Tab-One got a joint dropping soon.
I think Open Mike Eagle does too?
Earl and MAVI teamed up and I wish the song was a little longer but I’ll take it!
BONUS
Should I maybe release my next beat tape with a series of handmade zines? I am thinking about other merch to make too but I think I am having fun with the zines.
I don’t know it just feels like a vibe. I would include photos of the ones that I made this weekend but they are more prototypes and not emblematic of the zine that i’d be making for this run of beat tapes.
Also if i made official Donwill merch (probably just shirts and hats) would you guys be into that? Ultra limited run type shit. My guy George sent me a prototype and it’s got me wanting one and I figure If I want it you might.
*You really think I’d give you a NO option? LOL.
I’d buy a bucket hat(if available) and shirt.
I want a zine!! That asterisk is too low key for my hat, what about the sketchbook cover
