Summer is about a month away but allergy season is squarely upon us and Zyrtec has been saving my life! I did hear about a new allergy treatment that is an annual shot but but it’s said that it stops all allergies in general and is good for people with like deadly food allergies. They also said it’s like $1200 a pop which is a lot of money but based on how bad my allergies get I genuinely did consider looking into it further.
Okay enough of that, let’s get on to the bits and pieces you are here for which is music news!
SHOWS
5/22 - Shouting At The Screen is back at Nitehawk with Brittany Carney and you can get your tickets here. As usual the movie is a secret but If you’d like a hint as to what it possibly could be just know that if they would have remade it in the 90s the very obscure R&B group Cleopatra would have probably been on the soundtrack.
5/24 - Bunton’s World Famous is happening from 11pm until 4am and you can get tickets at the door. I am going to be so tired the next day but it’s gonna be so worth it.
NEWS
Slick Rick is dropping an album that will be executive produced by Idris Elba and I really hope Dris don’t have Rick rapping over Boasty. Ab Soul is teaming up with Roc Marciano for a full album.
Joey Badass is currently embroiled in a battle with an artist on TDE named Ray Vaughn, an ex TDE artist named Reason and a TDE affiliate named Daylyt. Joey is holding it down dolo and it’s making everyone wonder why NYC doesn’t have anyone who can step in the ring help him out.
YG went to ABC News to talk to Rocsi Diaz* about his new song that details him being sexually abused as a minor. He also talks about dealing with mental health in the interview as well. This coupled with the fact that he is one of the only rap artists to make an anti-Trump record makes him very interesting cus I honestly wouldn’t expect these stats to be on his score sheet. Big respect to YG.
Diddy’s trial has begun and while I’m not interested in discussing it I felt like I should let you know that it’s happening. If you want to know more you should click around the internet at your own risk cus it’s pretty graphic.
*also when did Rocsi Diaz start doing stuff for ABC News? Who ever thought that hip hop would take it this far! How do I get on CBS News Sunday Morning?! I AM SO SERIOUS!
VIDEOS
Joey, Sean and Ab Soul popped up here sparring in person to let you know that the ‘beef’ they’re involved in is contained to the music and all friendly competition.
I can’t decide if the song or the video is more fun. I love them both so much. Little Simz is about to drop an amazing project.
JID is making his way back to the airwaves.
GoldLink has made his way back as well and the song was not at all what I expected it to be.
Snoop Dogg dropped an album and a mini movie to coincide with it. I have played the album a few times and it is pretty good. I have not watched the full movie thing (and I probably won’t) but I did watch enough of it to learn that Snoop’s hoodie’s have holes in them to accommodate his ponytail.
Not gonna lie, that shit is impressive. Is this a part of his official merch? I need answers!
Mobb Deep popped up on Live From The Front Porch and while I haven’t watched it Big Noyd is standing in for Prodigy.
ALBUMS
I enjoyed this album very much and it is overall a feel good record.
I didn’t listen to much of this album but the stuff that I heard was good. The features are great as well. It’s a very big sounding rap record and exactly what you’d imagine a west coast legend would drop.
Blxst dropped off a few songs that I am assuming were leftovers from his last album. I played it and don’t fully remember what I heard but I know that it was jamming.
Jose James’ album finally dropped. It’s got some really well done covers and original tunes. Classic Jose
The homie Eahwee dropped a beat tape. I really enjoy listening to his stuff as a producer because it’s fun to dissect and think about what he’s doing with the machines he uses.
I didn’t really get to listen to this but I have a feeling it’s worth our collective attention.
I heard about half of this album and it was pretty damn good. Don’t know who Snick Foley is at all but he’s good. The beats are wonky* and the bars are sharp.
*wonky is a compliment
Cold 187um is on Xzibit’s album and I just clicked his profile to see what he was up to and low and behold he’s got an album that JUST dropped. Shout out to him for using that feature as an opportunity to drop some new stuff.
SINGLES
Skyzoo dropped an anthem for all the Knicks fans out there who are happy about he team finally making it to the Eastern Conference Finals.
NxWorries dropped a song that doesn’t feel like anything else they have ever done and I am not mad at it.
Scienze got an album coming with NappyHIGH soon and this joint is fire.
JaySwifa dropped a loosie out of the blue.
Tom Misch be jamming.
I think Jabee got an album coming.
Benny Sings be jamming.
Black Milk and Fat Ray are dropping bonus tracks but you still gotta get the album off bandcamp to hear it. brilliant.
BONUS
I’m currently trying to figure out how and when I want to relaunch The Almanac of Rap and thinking through new processes regarding recording/releasing it. I am strongly considering shifting the release date of the episodes to coincide with this newsletter which means that things here might change a bit.
I am still figuring out just how much things will change and it feels like a pretty seamless integration but the biggest part of this (as with most things) is just starting. So while I am not putting an exact date on the calendar yet I will say that as of right now I’m looking at things firing back up sometime in late July or early August.
So stay tuned and feel free to go catch up on the old episodes if you haven’t tapped in yet.
Phonte’s verse on Black Milk’s “No Wish”, also addresses sexual abuse and its familial effects. Incredibly brave. And good.
interested in your take on the Goldlink jont.
