Okay guys let’s just get into it…
SHOWS
Frankenstein’s Baby is back at Union Hall next October 21. It’ll be hosted by Alison Leiby and Josh Gondelman with a line-up thatincludes Jes Tom, Jordan Carlos, Jim Tews, and Sureni Weerasekera; for a guaranteed good time. TIX
On October 19th I’ll be at The Fuel Lounge OTR in Cincinnati doing a DJ set for DJ Rude One’s album release party. Rare Groove, noahlmean and seblove will be doing sets as well. It’s from 9pm til late and there’s no cover so drop by if you are around.
Shouting At The Screen is on October 24th and we’ve got some Halloween themed goodness lined up for you. It’s the last one of the year so you don’t want to miss your chance to laugh. TIX
THE ALMANAC OF RAP
For the penultimate episode of the season I got to chop it up with Homeboy Sandman about his music and what it’s like being offline. Spoiler alert: it sounds pretty peaceful and mostly productive.
One day I’ll be able to follow in his footsteps but for now I am choosing chaos.
NEWS
Aside from Glorilla dropping not much is happening. Oh yeah, out in LA J*Davey did their first show in like 20 years and I am hoping that the show hits the road for a New York spot date.
In personal news I did make it out to the Philly stop of the Stevie Wonder tour and it was incredible. I am still confused about how he managed to squeeze so many hits into a two hour set but he did it and I can honestly say I didn’t leave wishing he had done any other songs.
There was one thing that kept nagging me throughout the show tho and that thing is that him and LL kinda favor each other now. Maybe it’s a me thing and I could very well be bugging but.. am I? I’ll let you decide in the poll below.
(I feel like I need to stop talking about LL but he needs to stop being in the zeitgeist for that to happen so…)
VIDEOS
J. Cole dropped a song with a verse that addresses his side the Kendrick/Drake beef and you already know that the pod-o-sphere is going crazy talking about it. We are never getting out of this cycle are we?
Xzibit is dropping his first album in a long time and he dropped a video to go along with it. Can’t lie I’m loving all these OGs coming out to play.
Keeping it on the west coast Buddy just dropped off this video off of his last release and if you missed the album you should probably go back and check it out.
I don’t remember how I bumped into this song but I am happy I did. Greentea Peng is pretty dope and I love a hard drumbreak as a centerpiece.
The algorithm has been pushing Samara Cyn on me for a minute and I finally decided to listen. Sometimes the algorithm is right and this is one of those times. Good job algorithm, good job.
ALBUMS
E L U C I D dropped Revelator and it’s one of those things that you should probably drop what you’re doing to check out immediately.
Rob Cave dropped a project called The God Dose that he produced alongside 88-Keys. You can cop it direct from his bandcamp page.
Illa J and Ash Walker dropped an EP and I feel like I posted about it before but I’m too lazy to check and see if I did. It’s a really cool project so it’s worth it.
The year of FE Music continues and Nicolay is the next stop on the release schedule with Terra Firma. I haven’t got to listen to it yet but I am excited to check it out.
Pharrell dropped compilation masquerading as a soundtrack with a few new songs on the front of the album which qualifies it for my purposes.
New Dom Kennedy? Okay! I really like his music and still get hype when I see his name pop up.
Mutant Academy is a dope squad and they are doing all the right things including consistently dropping heat like this.
The evolution of Nate Mercereau has been so cool to see and his new album really shows how incredibly talented he is.
SONGS
Ab-Soul keeping things hot over at TDE and people are saying he’s sending shots at Cole. Who knows.
Reason got off TDE and is doing dope music.
Tuxedo is always on point
I don’t know who Isaiah Falls is but I do know who Joyce Wrice is and I love the chill R&B vibes.
I’ve been up on Wynne for a minute but haven’t really posted about her and well this song finally broke through.
This is a really cool song and it makes me wonder if i will like more stuff from Clairo.
This is from a full album that Agoria dropped but this song is the one that found me thanks to Madison.
Anything featuring Emily King is a no brainer.
And anything featuring Yukimi is a no brainer too.
