I don't appreciate fans thinking it's okay to dictate the direction an artist should go. If we really cared about the human being and not just like them when they are satisfying our needs, we would realize that he needs to do this for the preservation of his mental health. Plus, we never disparaged artists like Prince every time he wanted to get creative and do something cutting edge. We have to allow artists to spread their wings and explore what else they can offer the world. The album works for me. I create to it, can meditate to it, write to it, paint to it and really stretch my mind to it. In my opinion, it's a win. This album is a classic example of not having expectations because when we do, we will always be disappointed.
Great piece. Instead of making me sad I found the the purity and conviction of his endeavour inspiring. If only more people abandoned the burden of emptily creating what others expect of them. Another good interview with him on this - from a slightly earlier perspective in 2019 - with Rick Rubin, is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjHcHTJ8D5k
i remember this interview and yeah dre just following his muse. i definitely try to model that which is why i try so many different things creatively and also quit so many things LOL
That interview did make me sad he doesn't want to rap any more but I did agree with him that rapping isn't something you can just pick up and put down as you please. Need to exercise that part of the brain regularly and he just doesn't wanna do that. Also, it's weird that anyone should tell an artist what kind of art they should make. And why would/should an artist listen to them anyways? Do I want a 90-minute flute album? No. But if he wants to make one and people will pay him to do it, fair do's.
I so appreciate your review. I love letting people be free to create instead of holding them hostage to the creativity they shared with us in the past. Folks are evolving so their art will too. Dope article.
I will listen to the interviews later on today. I also find the flute album to be very relaxing. Coincidentally, I've been trying to find something to calm my nerves for this class I'm taking, and this was the perfect album. It's great for sleep, focus, and calming my anxiety.
