New Music Tuesday #83
Madison McFerrin, Andy Mineo, The Expert and Boot Camp Click's 30th Anniversary.
Over the weekend I went to the Boot Camp Click 30th Anniversary show at Lincoln Center. It was a pretty dope show and along with all of the members of the Boot Camp Click there were special guests that included Pharoahe Monch, M.O.P. and KRS-1.
There was a silent disco set up just outside the show and I dropped by to check it out. When I put on the headphones I heard MOP playing and it was very disorienting. MOP at a silent disco is weird because you want to yell the lyrics which kinda goes against the vibe of a silent disco BUT M.O.P. at a silent disco would be a great song title tho.
The most interesting part of the whole event for me however was when I left the show and got to the 59th street train stop and descended the stairs to see no less than 30 police officers waiting to greet concertgoers. The median age of that crowd is approximately 55 years old. There is no crime to fight there. Everybody got bad knees. Nobody is hopping the train. Was this just police officer muscle memory? Like they remember policing rap shows in the 90s so they just have to show up to the old folks rap events too?
SHOWS
Do you use Mixcloud? If the answer is yes you should follow me there. My East Village Radio show lives there it is is basically this newsletter in audio format. It’s a guided playlist of new and interesting music sent to you on a bi-weekly basis and it’s pretty damn good.
I also upload audio from the various parties that I spin around Brooklyn. So if you need a soundtrack for your cookouts or house parties but can’t afford to fly me out all you gotta do is push play!
Other than that there are no shows this week. This whole month is kinda light to be honest. I’m back at Franklin Park on July 19th as well as Frankenstein’s Baby on July 21st.
NEWS
Drake dropped a new single called What Did I Miss that was took jabs at all of his detractors. He’s putting together a project that is rumored to be titled Iceman which was in the works for a while. I think it’s based around the comic book character but I personally think that calling your album Iceman is crazy in today’s climate.
LL Cool J was supposed to perform in Philadelphia on the 4th of July for Wawa’s Welcome America concert on but he dropped out of the line up to be in solidarity with the city’s union workers who are on strike. This was a really solid move on his part if you ask me.
VIDEOS
This song and video are really dope. I feel like i have seen Andy Mineo’s name before but don’t know much about his music.
I love the way Sadat X raps. It’s so specific.
Jay Versace making some of the best beats is not something that I expected to see but I’ve learned to not let anything shock me anymore.
This is a cool ass song.
