I spent Juneteenth in Burlington, Vermont of all places. If Vermont isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you think of Juneteenth or hip hop then your mind is right. It is however a very lovely city with great scenery, a close knit community and surprisingly more black people than I expected to see.
I did find out about some Burlington hip hop tho and I’ll include that at the end of the email as a bonus because that’s the bait to make sure that you make it to the end of the message. Nothing builds anticipation like ‘Burlington Hip Hop’.
I was there with Michelle Buteau while she ran new material and it’s always fun to watch her writing process. Like seeing her build out the jokes, edit them, sequence them and then pair down or expand on ideas is pretty cool. The new hour is shaping up to be something special!
I am currently in Paris and next I’ll be headed to Texas. Not Paris, Texas but San Antonio Texas. SIDEBAR: Paris, Texas holds more real estate in my mind as a musical act and movie than it does as an actual city. I made it here just in time to pop out at
’ performance at the New Morning which was super fun.Okay, let’s kick this off so I can go eat some croissants and test the limits of my Duolingo learning.
SHOWS
6/23 A new episode of Too Much Rap just aired on East Village Radio and you can listen to the replay in my archives. I’ve really gotta put more energy into getting people to listen to that show. It’s really good! It’s basically this newsletter but in audio form.
7/4 I’ll be at Franklin Park playing some cookout jams for that ass. Come through and hang! it’s FREE.
NEWS
Let’s see…
I’ll be ready to make some announcements about The Almanac of Rap Season 4 very soon. This upcoming season might be my most ambitious yet and that is saying something since last season was the leap to video!
Erykah Badu did a concert on Amazon Prime for Juneteenth, Timbaland ‘apologized’ for using unsigned artists to train his AI model, Cardi B, Wale, Daz Dillinger and Memphis Bleek all dropped music.
VIDEOS & RANDOM
The Clipse are on a very spicy press tour. I’ve been waiting on this specific interview to drop for a while now and while I haven’t seen it yet I know that it’s gonna be a good one.
They also dropped this joint with a few bars aimed at Travis Scott tacked on to the end. The song itself is pretty enjoyable and I like it more than the first single.
Kenn Starr teamed up with Kev Brown for a new project named Cold. It’s up on his bandcamp and features none other than Tanya Morgan. It’s not on streaming yet either so you know what you gotta do!
Asher Roth is on tour and still doing dope shit like this. He also has a substack!
Nola Young is a pretty interesting new artist. She was on Tyler’s album and ever since I keeps seeing her name and I’m never disappointed.
Bruno Mars just be doing shit. I have no idea what this is or what it is for but I enjoy it. I think it has something to do with Fortnite. Or maybe he is Brazilian now? I don’t know. He has been living his best life for a long time now tho.
ALBUMS
I haven’t heard this yet but Terrance Martin on the R&B tip is always a vibe.
I have no idea who this band is but based on the two songs that I’ve heard the music is definitely right up my alley.
I haven’t heard this yet but it looks pretty good.
I haven’t heard this yet but I enjoy Milc’s music so this should be good.
I was JUST thinking about Jurassic 5 and wondering where the members of the group were so it’s good to see AKIL being active. This ep is the length of a song but it’s good.
Every time Ric Wilson drops I tell myself I am going to look into Ric Wilson to figure out who the hell he is. I love his music.
Rapsody went direct to fans on her new project with Madlib. It’s on her website
Vic Mensa went direct to consumer with his new album Sundiata. You can get it on his website.
I don’t believe in guilty pleasures so I am sharing this because I am excited that HAIM is back. I really like them.
SINGLES
New
just dropped!!Erykah and Alchemist dropped a jam from their upcoming project. She also has a song called Echos 19 (mix 122) on Amazon Music that nobody has talked about at all lol.
Wale is back with another solid jam.
Sandy and Sonny? Yeah man.
This kid Maxo is pretty dope.
My guy
just dropped a new jammy.BONUS
There is a town near Burlington named Winooski and apparently it is the Brooklyn of Vermont. This comparison is based on it being very multi-cultural and densely populated. A group named A2VT (which I believe stands for Africa To Vermont) made a theme song for the city and it’s kinda fun if you ask me.
I did not make it over to Winooski while I was out there but that gives me something to look forward to on the next trip right?
I can see why you might place the HAIM joint in the guilty pleasure category (YT gals walking), but over here, it's an album of the year contender.
Shit is good.
