March has finally arrived which means that it’s Women’s History Month. Sadly this administration wants to take it off the calendar along with anything related to diversity, equity and inclusion. While that won’t stop me from celebrating women' and their many contributions it is a bit dystopian that the federal government was basically just like “fuck yall”. Dystopian as fuck.
Ironically enough
and mentioned Silo and Paradise on stage a few weeks ago and it inadvertently convinced me to watch both of them and they are dystopian as fuck too. Both shows are about disastrous events that force people to go live underground and while they are both set in underground bunkers they are two very different shows. As far as disaster porn goes Paradise feels a little more like this world while Silo feels more like sci-fi. Silo also has Common in it which if nothing else shows his dedication to being an underground rapper. *drumroll*But enough about TV shows, here are the shows that I’ll be doing this week.
SHOWS
On March 7 I’ve got a gig that I can’t talk about publicly so I am not talking about it but if you are in town and looking for a cool thing to do from 10p - 1am hit me up and I’ll put you on the list.
NEWS
In a bit of urgent personal news Von Pea’s wife has to have heart surgery soon and he’ll be taking some time off of work to take care of her. They’ve started a GoFundMe to help offset some of the costs from the loss of wages and it’s almost fully funded. If you guys could help them get to their goal it would mean a lot to both me and them.
In other news this week we lost Angie Stone, Roberta Flack, Gwen McCrae and Gene Hackman. That is a lot of loss and with the world being what it is these days it feels even worse. Even if you don’t know Angie, Roberta or Gwen’s catalog you have definitely enjoyed their music via their songs being sampled.
The Wu-Tang Clan announced their final tour as a full unit but weren’t they just on tour with Nas? Did something happen while they were out to make them decide that they should just nip future tours in the bud and give us one last chance to see them live? Isn’t Wu-Tang supposed to be forever? Doesn’t that include touring?
And speaking of live shows I saw Diana Ross at Kings theater. She brought her daughter Rhonda out to do a mini set and it was riddled with technical difficulties then during Diana’s final song she brought Rhonda back out and her mic wasn’t working. Tragic. Diana was amazing tho and her catalog is deep as fuck. I feel like if she can tour with multiple outfit changes and rock platforms at 80 then the Wu can figure out how to keep touring but what do I know…
Okay on to the new stuff
VIDEOS
I don’t know who 6ix is but I know that an easy way to get me to listen to a song is to put Buddy, Blu and Like on it. This joint is jamming. Can’t wait to check out 6ix’s album when it drops.
Madison McFerrin dropped a video for her song Ain’t It Nice and it’s also available on her Bandcamp should you want to put some dollars behind the art.
The good people over at Closed Sessions sent this new Recoechi single over and it’s really dope. They’re working on finishing up his album right now but in the meantime enjoy this Statik Selektah produced banger.
In Googling the name of this song I discoverd that Yukimi is Swedish and that fucked me up cus for some reason I just thought she was from the Bay. Anyway her album For You drops on 3/25.
I am the target audience for video essays and not only do I watch a lot of them but I watch a pretty wide variety. This one about Kendrick Lamar felt kinda revealing because his creative process is slightly mysterious. I really enjoyed finding out that the Mustard part in TV Off was a Goku impersonation.
And while we are talking about creative processes, how exactly did this get made? I know that KFC is popping in other countries but I had no idea they were doing it this big. I don’t think we’ve seen anything equivalent from them here in the states so this was just kinda jarring to see.
ALBUMS
Homeboy Sandman linked up with Illingsworth for a four song ep and it’s a pretty fun listen.
My guy Wavy Bagels dropped an album and while I haven’t gotten to check it out he’s one of those guys I’ll blindly post cus it’s worth it.
No idea who this person is but I have to wonder if their choice to use ‘Your Best Friend’ in their name is somehow related to ‘Your Old Friend Droog’. Either way dope beats!
I watch this guys Youtube page a lot and finally decided to go see if he had an album out and yup, he does. This is it.
Skyzoo’s label released this album by Landon Wordswell and it’s pretty dope with a few solid features.
Every few months I ask where NAO is and I finally found her! I haven’t heard this album yet but I’m excited to check it out.
Terrace Martin been dropping music at a heavy clip for some time now. I was very hype to see Tone Trezure pop up here too.
I thought IDK dropped this album a few weeks ago? I get kinda confused by these deluxe albums. Regardless the album is pretty dope.
I haven’t heard this but Reason fought hard to get off TDE and has been dropping a lot of music since he got his release.
I think this project is called The Plot and the In Progress part refers to the addition of singles as they drop? Dunno. The music is fresh tho.
SONGS
Kweli assembled a song that features Black Thought, Busta Rhymes, Posdunous and the Jungle Brothers.
New Benny Sings! I have not heard it yet but happy it exists.
Pocket Queen and PJ Morton? Absolutely yes.
I have not heard this song either but Little Simz is dope so it belongs here.
Love Adi Oasis and fuck with Seun Kuti. This is dope.
Kaidi is such an incredible producer and this song is exemplary of his overall catalog. He got an album coming out.
BONUS
I am in the middle of working on a bunch of new music and I’ll be sharing some information about it soon.
In the meantime I’d like to just to remind everyone that Don’t Look Up b/w Move It or Lose It is still available on 45” record and you can cop it here. I don’t know how many copies are left but I do know that we finally broke even on it which means that if you buy it we get paid! So yeah go buy a copy or two so that they are all gone!
all sauce as usual. 🔥🔥🔥
I know I'm not gonna see eye-to-eye with Homeboy Sandman on a lot of shit (which is why I got off of his mailing list), but I'll forever find him compelling to listen to. Like, I have fun every time I listen to him, no matter the project. That's missing from a lot of folks in the game, whatever flavor their rap is dipped in. There's joy in every bar from that guy.
That 6ix track landed on my radar via Spotify since Blu is on it, so I'm gonna have to give it a spin. Thanks for the heads-up!
