New Music Tuesday #63
New Jazz Underground, 2 Chainz x Larry June x Alchemist & J.Period
We just popped the seal on the second week of February and so far it’s been absolutely exhausting. The month that is best known for Black History, expensive dates, award shows, football games, J Dilla, the occasional start of a new presidential term and being the shortest month is just getting started. And once it finally starts it abruptly stops because it is a short king.
But exhaustion or not the show newsletter must go on right? Right!
So here I am with some new releases and the same show dates as last month. I also just really want to implore you to come to Shouting At The Screen on Feb 20th.
SHOWS
Feb 13 - Dick & Jane’s some free pre-Valentines Day vibes. I’m doing an R&B set and you’re singing at the top of your lungs. A true win win!
Feb 14 - Bunton’s with Meka. It’s a Valentines Day jam. We haven’t spun together in wild long so I’m hype to run some tunes with him. Couples are welcome and singles are encouraged. Just find your way to the spot! Tickets are for sale here
Feb 17 - Frankenstein’s Baby - Jean Grae! Shane Torres! Asha Ward! Jim Search! Gavin Matts! Jenny Zigrino! TICKETS!!
Feb 20 - Shouting at The Screen - I know i just threw three ticket links at you and they are all important but this one right here? Dare I call it mandatory? Maybe? Probably not but please remember that it’s black history month and this event is a cultural institution that only happens 4 times a year now. TICKETS
Feb 25 - Trivmatic a little bit of free fun to cap off the year! It’s hip hop trivia at Bierwax. Come through and win braggin rights!
NEWS
The Eagles won the Superbowl and Kendrick used his halftime show to do a victory lap. Highlights included SZA, Uncle Sam Jackson, Serena Crip Walking, looking directly into camera and smiling on the line ‘Say Drake…” and his jeans. (I see that boot cuts are coming back and I refuse to go. Not gonna do it! I refuse to walk on the back of my jeans in these dirty ass NYC streets)
And speaking of fashion, Drake is currently in Australia on his oddly named Anita Maxx Wynn tour (apparently it’s his alter-ego (did you guys know he streams on Kick? (there are too many platforms))) and wearing some really outrageous outfits. He’s got a collab album coming out on Valentines Day with PartyNextDoor.
Kanye Ye got on Twitter X to “get some shit off his chest” and by that I mean be purposely offensive in the name of “free speech”. He also used the moment ot announce a collaboration between his brand and Sean John as well a shirt with a swastika on it which is just… yeah. Also I think that there is some loose Dipset collab happening? I don’t know just a few dots that I don’t think have been connected yet.
Lastly RIP to Irv Gotti who passed away at 54 due to what people believe was a stroke but has yet to be confirmed.
VIDEOS
The algorithm thought I’d like Joy Crookes and guess what, they got it right! Cool ass video too.
Cav and Quelle continue the trend of not missing with this latest clip.
And while we’re on the subject of dynamic duos Red and Meth got a fun joint from Muddy Waters Too
Yasiin Bey has yet to release Money Christmas but here is the making of one of the songs from the album (?). It’s cool cus you can actually hear the song.
Infinity Song is back with a song for the times with a sturdy ass hook that goes “Why should i worry about rocking a sinking boat”
Terence Nance dropped a concert film for his album Vortex and I’m positing it here as a reminder to myself to finally check it out.
ALBUMS
The New Jazz Underground have aimed their instruments at Kendrick and put together a really fresh set of Kendrick inspired songs and interpolations.
J.Period honors Dilla and De La by mixing them together on this EP.
Alchemist got 2 Chainz sounding like Titty Boi and I love it. Bonus points for ALC putting the album on Bandcamp.
Like from Pac Div making house music and doing a great job of it at that.
Roddy Rod got a new project out under the name Built Brothers.
Kaelin Ellis doesn’t disappoint.
SINGLES
Spvde got a JAM with this one. I hear the full project is pretty incredible as well.
Karriem teamed up with Westside Gunn and Busta to pay homage to Dilla.
Saba and No ID are back at it. They make a great team.
Did not know Omari Hardwick made music and it’s surprisingly good. Honeslty tho i’d listen to anything Saadiq played on so there’s that.
Smf-N-Wessun album gonna be special.
Rob Cave. Rob Cave. Rob Cave. Rob Cave.
I was tipped off to Goya Gumbani thanks to
