New Music Tuesday #59
Smif-N-Wessun, Mac Miller, Wyatt Cenac and unreleased Tanya Morgan
In the last few days wildfires have absolutely devastated parts of Los Angeles and not only are they still raging but the wind conditions that have helped them spread are about to pick back up. I’ve been checking in on friends in the area and monitoring as much as possible via social media but it all feels so unpredictable and terrifying from over here in Brooklyn. As a way to help out I’ve put together a few links to charities that will help get resources to people in need.
AfroPunk has created a list of GoFund Me campaigns of all the Black individuals and families who’ve been affected by the LA fires, specifically in Altadena and Pasadena. You can also help by donating to MusiCares. They’ve launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort To Support Music Professionals impacted by the crisis. Madlib and his family lost everything as well and they’ve a launched a fundraiser to help him rebuild his home and studio.
I’m sure we’ll hear of countless more people who have been affected and need our help in the coming weeks.
SHOWS
Jan 18 - I’ll be DJing at La Noxe in Manhattan. It’s a speakeasy styled spot in a subway station (28th St. stop on the 1 train) and it’s free so if you’re feeling adventurous drop by. I’ll be on from 10p - 2a and I’m playing a mix of boogie, funk, soul & r&b.
Jan 20 - Frankenstein’s Baby is back at Union Hall and tickets are available right here.
Jan 15, 16, 21, 22 - Fresh off of dropping her latest hour on Netflix Michelle Buteau will be back at the Bell House to start working on the new one.
NEWS
I kinda dropped a new album last week. To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of his album ‘Brooklyn’ my homie
hit me up to add some panache on the production tip. So now it’s basically like a combination of a live beat set and a stand up comedy show. It’s a really fun project and I’d love if you guys checked it out.
I’ll be doing more beat stuff soon too because I am really having fun making beats again and my Bandcamp page is D R Y.
In other music news SZA teasing new music on her IG page and yU is flat out dropping songs as IG reels and posts. I’m all for people disrupting social media but I hope some of them joints at least make it to bandcamp.
And speaking of SZA I am pretty hype for One of Them Days cus Issa Rae can do no wrong and KeKe Palmer is an absolute delight.
Okay I think that’s it.
VIDEOS
Nate Smith has a really cool Youtube series that is part podcast and part improvised live performance. I just caught the episode with Melanie Charles and if you don’t know who either of these people are this will make you an instant fan of both.
Another artist with a really cool video series is Terrace Martin. His is slightly less focused however and more just a real time glimpse at his creative process. The minimal editing gives it a real fly on the wall feel.
Rae Khalil put out a video for this really dope song from the really dope album she dropped last year.
Last week Joey Bada$$ took very vague shots at who some believe to be Kendrick Lamar but since he didn’t name names and just called out the west coast he has prompted responses from a minor slew of rappers including Ray Vaughn and Daylyt.
Dunno how many of you are still into the whole rap feud as a subgenre at this point but I’m sure the pile on will continue as the original beef continues to age.
Coast Contra dropped an 11 minute long video that is somewhere between a rap cypher and a stage play. Intriguing!
ALBUMS
Jansport J put out a new project and it’s full of high quality instrumentals. Very vibey.
Adrian Younge’s Jazz is Dead imprint just put this Hyldon album up for pre-sale and it looks like it’s gonna be a sure shot. You can’t really go wrong with their catalog tho.
My guy Steel Tipped Dove linked up with doseone for some experimental rap shit. It’s a Backwoodz release so a few of the usual suspects are featured on the record.
AKAI SOLO dropped a joint and while I haven’t got to check it out yet I enjoy his music in general so I am sure I’ll dig it.
SINGLES
Mac Miller has an album set to drop soon and here is the first single. It’s got Thundercat on the assist so you know it’s funky.
ScienZe dropped this cool ass joint produced by the homie Ilajide and it’s got my guy JMNOP on the intro.
Smif-N-Wessun just dropped off this new jam as they are gearing up for a new album fully produced by 9th Wonder’s Soul Council collective.
I genuinely have no idea who this is and I haven’t had much time to do research about him but is IG page says he won a Grammy is from NJ. Regardless this song is pretty cool
You can always count on Mathien to drop a jam.

Remember that Tanya Morgan x Low Budget song that I talked about last week? Well I played it on my East Village Radio show last week and it’s up right now for you to listen to.
