New Music Tuesday #55
Smino, Roc Marciano, Bun B & Statik Selectah and Doechii's Tiny Desk
The end of the year is upon us and even tho the entertainment industry is wrapping up their 4th quarter business and balancing books the artists are still arting so here’s what happened over the last week in new releases.
SHOWS
I’m back on East Village Radio this Wednesday from 10am - 12pm and I’m very happy to be back in the booth. Tune in at EastVillageRadio.com
The last Frankenstein’s Baby of 2024 will be on December 16th at Union Hall. Tickets are here.
NEWS
Spotify Unwrapped dropped and the way they capture your data for these things is weird. I would go into a full breakdown of it but I ain’t about to do all that right now. I just know that some of the songs/artists they put in my top were based on me making playlists for ppl or doing research and not actually on what I listened to.
I went to Art Basel and had a great time. I interviewed Danny Hastings and Derrick Milano for the Almanac of Rap and went to Dante’s Hi-fi twice. The second time I was there I got to check out the Do-Over which had a stellar line up. Tara, Craze, Cosmo, Dam-Funk… it was a vibe. Craze dropped some Poison Clan and 2 Live Crew in his set that I hadn’t heard since like 9th grade and it was easily one of my favorite moments of the weekend.
The recordings went well and while I’m not sure when the episodes will drop I am assuming it will be sometime this week.
((For those of you curious about who was in my Spotify Unwrapped I’ll post them at the bottom of the newsletter. You know I love a bonus!))
VIDEOS
On December 31 you’ll be able to watch Michelle’s new Netflix special. This is the show we’ve been touring for the last few months and getting to play Radio City Music Hall with it was amazing because she is the first woman to tape a comedy special there which makes it even more historic. I got to compose the theme music for the show alongside Damien Sneed who is an amazing pianist, vocalist and composer.
If you needed proof that Damien was the truth here is a clip of him killing shit at Dizzy’s Club. Can’t wait for you guys to hear this music and those jokes! This special is truly special.
Doechii brought a masterclass of a performance to her Tiny Desk and everything from wardrobe to choreography was considered. Give this woman all of her things, immediately.
Roc Marciano and The Alchemist dropped a new album and for the moment it’s available at Roc’s website but the full thing hit’s streaming this Friday.
Rob Cave dropped a new video and the song is up on Bandcamp
Youtube recommended Kaiit to me and I was pleasantly surprised. I have yet to fully go down the rabbit hole but I am pretty sure I’m gonna like what I find.
Smino dropped a new video. I jokingly call him ‘Jazz Nelly’ because they are both from St. Louis and have a melodic style but I know they are not the same. This made me wonder if they had ever worked together and lo and behold I found an unreleased collab on a random reddit page.
No links were available so enjoy this screen recorded video if you want to hear their worlds collide.
ALBUMS
Here’s that Smino album I mentioned a few sentences ago.
TOKiMONSTA dropped an EP that features a few of my favorite folk.
Bun B and Statik Selectah came together for the fourth installment of their Trillstatik series. It’s available on Bandcamp now.
Shabaka dropped an ep with some pretty cool features.
Steve Spacek reissued this gem of an album from 2005(??)
CZARFACE and Kool Keith have teamed up to form Stress Eater and put out a new album that looks pretty interesting.
Why doesn’t Spotify let you search their catalog based on label? That’s pretty dumb if you ask me. Anyway here is a new project from Apollo Brown and CRIMEAPPLE.
I am not familiar with K-The-I??? but being that this is a Backwoodz release chances are it’s gonna be a really dope album. What can I say, I am biased.
SONGS
Tom Misch has been dropping new singles every month and this is the one for this month.
I am pretty sure this got suggested to me because of Mereba and I am happy it did because it’s dope.
Wyatt sent me this because he thought it was somebody else and it ended up being a very happy accident cus this guy is dope.
This is pretty dope. The beat goes NUTS.
I meant to post this months ago but if it’s new to you then that’s all that counts. Shout out to Lindsay. She’s super dope.
Also shout out to Arooj. She’s up for two Grammy nominations this year.
BONUS
Okay so here are my stats.*
Top Artists:
Blu - Yup. I played a lot of Blu cus he dropped a lot of music.
Stevie Wonder - Yup. Makes a ton of sense.
Ghostface Killah - I researched him for a week and I think that ran his numbers up.
Common - I listen to a lot of Common. This tracks.
Tanya Morgan - If enjoying my own music is a crime then I am guilty as charged.
Top Songs:
How Deep Is Your Love - PJ Morton - VALID
Baby Don’t Cry - Lalah Hathaway - VALID
YA YA - Beyonce - I added this song to a few playlists and now it’s in my top songs. Not valid. Don’t really even remember playing it tbh.
Do You Know? - Donnie - VALID
MS BEHAVE - Tierra Whack - Again, added it to a few playlists and now it’s stuck in my top songs. Not so valid.
Okay if you have your Spotify Wrapped results throw em in the comments. I’m very curious to see what other folks were listening to.
Kaiit is the truth, i'd recommend songs like Space, Miss shiney, natural woman, she just got out of a label situation and is living her life , she is indigenous australian
