New Music Tuesday #48
Tyler The Creator, De La Soul, Ari Lennox, newish Tanya Morgan and Lupe Fiasco on AOR
Okay there is a lot going on in the world of music so let’s just jump into it.
SHOWS
I'm back on East Village Radio this Wednesday from 10a - 12p
Shouting at The Screen is on 10/24 (THIS WEEK) and I really can’t stress how much I need yall to buy tickets or tell a friend who’s in town to buy tickets and come out. We’ve got Alexis Bradby and Kristal Adams of Astigmatism Comedy riding shotgun this month. You can get your tickets here.
THE ALMANAC OF RAP
For the season three finale I got to sit down with Lupe Fiasco and we talked about his discography, the supergroups he has been a part of, Virgil, martial arts, MIT and a lot more. I also did a slight deep dive on the uses of AI in rap and asked the question if rap could ever accept a full on AI artist and the answer (in my humble opinion) is no. Fuck no even.
We’re still cooking up a few things to promote the current season but that’s officially a wrap and if you think I’m taking a break LOL you do not know me very well.
NEWS
The big news this week is that A Tribe Called Quest was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kendrick Lamar sat down with SZA for Harper’s Bazaar in what is his first interview since the Big 3 beef popped off. Drake on the other hand has moved to Texas and is singing in full on Spanish which sounds like something that I made up but I kid you not.
And Tyler The Creator is dropping an album next Tuesday which works very well for my newsletter. It also means that he is in album roll out mode which is just basically new content every day.
VIDEOS
This was the video that Tyler used to announce his album. He’s got a new character and the vibe is sort like Cherry Bomb. I’m excited.
De La Soul dropped a video for Oodles Of O’s and I am so sad that I didn’t go to the pop up donut shot they built to shoot it. I was definitely in New York that day and I absolutely was at home with full awareness that it was happening but just didn’t go. FAIL. The video is dope tho.
Ari Lennox has been listening to Lady Wray and Amy Winehouse. Just kidding, this song is dope tho.
Lil Yachty continues to do that thing where he drops something that I kinda enjoy but is very different from the thing he just did that I didn’t enjoy. This is dope but there are two other songs that dropped as well that I’ll let you track down if you want to hear them.
ALBUMS
Kaimbr and DJ Applejac have teamed up for an album and it’s pretty dope. It’ll be on streaming soon but for now it’s on BANDCAMP
DJ Rude One’s album just dropped and it’s really dope with some cool as features on it.
Samora Pinderhughes dropped an album and I know the name but not the music so I’ll be using this album to get familiar.
Lin Manuel Miranda and Nas have turned The Warriors into a musical with women cast as the protagonists and Lauryn Hill in the role of Cyrus. Very interesting stuff.
I’ve been cautiously watching Lexa Gates because I am not fully sold on her to be honest but the album is of interest so I’m sharing it. I skimmed it and it’s okay. Somebody said she’s like Lana Del Ray meets Griselda and I’m just tired of people using rap tropes as a schtick to pivot from.
In other news here is an actual Griselda related release.
Homeboy Sandman dropped a new EP too.
SONGS
This song came out on the Monday before this newsletter releases so that should let you know that Tyler is applying the pressure. There’s a really cool video for it out as well.
Danny Brown did a deluxe version of his album and this Black Milk produced joint is the standout for me.
Che Noir hooked up with Rapsody and I just think it’s dope that she is producing her own shit.
This is a fun lil poppy number.
This song is VERY poppy but I like Bruno Mars and pop music so no complaints from me. It’s got a really fun video as well.
ADDENDUM
Speaking of DJ Applejac he sent over this remix to our song The Motion and I am honestly still trying to figure out exactly how to release it but it’s too good not to share.
If any DJ’s want a copy of it let me know!
Okay dassit!
I love these updates and enjoy how much ground they cover! I’m somewhat surprised that you haven’t mentioned Ka’s passing in either this or the previous update given that you spoke about him in your Homeboy Sandman interview. That kind of stuff is tricky though, not formally complaining but I wasn’t sure how to express this productively. Looking forward to future updates for sure, keep doing your thing.
Yes Will,,,,,,
Any chance of the DL for the DJ Applejac remix please??
