Bilal, Tyler The Creator and Danny Brown plus MC Lyte on AOR
Welcome to October and don’t forget to pay your rent. Got a few shows coming up this month and some cool new music for you to check out in this
SHOWS
Frankenstein’s Baby is at Union Hall on 10/7 with another stellar line up. Tickets are here.
I’m doing an all vinyl set at Bar Meridian on 10/11. I’m on 9pm until late. It’s free
Shouting At The Screen is back at Nitehawk Cinema on 10/24. Tickets are here
THE ALMANAC OF RAP
This week’s guest is MC Lyte and as usual it’s a fun one. We talked about how she pioneered the game, her long career and fashion. The episode also features a segment about hip hop cartoons and how cartoonish rappers can be in times.
NEWS
Hmm let’s see… Clipse got an album coming. I am sure there is more happening in music news but at the moment that’s all I’ve got.
VIDEOS
Here’s a really cool short film that my friend Sucio Smash is in. It’s been shown at a few festivals already so I have started calling him EGOT SUCE.
He’s also having a birthday party on 10/4 at Lovejoy’s with a set by DJ Spinna and some special guests. If you’re in town feel free to RSVP and yell happy birthday at him.
If you heard the MC Lyte episode you’ll know that I talked about how Tierra Whack needs a show which makes this video right on time. I’m a prophet!
Common and Pete are promoting the hell out of this album and I love it. They just dropped this video but over the weekend they played the Blue Note and the show is probably one of the best things I’ve seen in a while.
This video includes two sets so you can watch it twice if you really want to. Blue Note is so cramped! This is a way better way to experience it. (that was a joke. support live music)
WILLOW’s album is great and if you are letting her celebrity parents get in the way of you checking it out I highly suggest that you don’t do thtat.
I don’t know who this guy is but this shit is GROOVY and I’m gonna have to look up more of his stuff.
I saw this a while ago and forgot to add it to the newsletter. Ezra Collective just dropped a whole album but this video was way too fun to not post.
Tobe has a new album out and as usual the videos are just stunning. What is this man’s production budget like? Did he paint a whole motel? Do you have to own said motel to paint it? This guy is the rap game A24.
And speaking of Samm Henshaw (who’s featured on that Tobe song) he just dropped a short film which is like a visual EP. He’s super dope!
ALBUMS
Bilal dropped a new album and I haven’t really had a chance to listen to it. I heard bits and pieces and it was quality.
9th and Give Em Soul have teamed up for an album. It’s mostly instrumental and very soulful. One might even say jazz adjacent.
I feel like Leon Thomas just popped up on me. Regardless his album is definitely something that belongs here. I’m interested.
Found this courtesy of the good people over at Co-Sign and it’s a really fun project.
PremRock and Willie Green teamed up and dropped off a fresh set of songs.
SONGS
J. Cole been on a feature run and I’m not mad at it. Best way to shake the stink of that whole battle thing off is to just rap. Not gonna lie tho that hook is really oddly timed.
Tyler and Maxo went back to the well. This is very Pharrell and the Clipse coded.
A Buddy feature always piques my interest.
Danny Brown came through with the dope loosie.
I’m always here for a PJ Morton song.
Blvck Spvde and his new band are gearing up for an album and dropping heat along the way. The songs have sounded like they are part of a live recording.
This joint is jamming.
All i needed to see was KAYTRANADA.
BONUS
Here’s a new mix from my East Village Radio show. It’s basically like this newsletter but for your ears. So if clicking all those links ain’t your thing you can just click this one link to listen to it here.
