Happy Tuesday. No long talk let’s get into the newslettering.

SHOWS

I am pretty sure that there are no live shows this week. I’m just planning to work on the stuff I’ve got going on but if somebody calls me and says ‘hey do you wanna DJ?’ chances are I’ll do it.

In the mean time is my mix for last week’s East Village Radio show. It’s an episode that focuses on new music so a healthy portion of the songs in this email are also in the mix. You can hear it here and the tracklist is over there as well.

Oh and I don’t plan on being on Twitch tomorrow but you never know! I just might pop up.

THE ALMANAC OF RAP

Got a chance to talk to my brother Von Pea about Okayplayer, the internet and the type of rappers it has created.

I want to say that this is a really fun episode but honestly every episode is a really fun one. I also started this newsletter with the intention of featuring each episode as it’s own post with bonus content and episode insights that I picked up will filming and well… that didn’t happen LOL (I am but one mere man… with several other jobs!)

I mean I can always go back and do it right? lul.

NEWS

I’ve been learning about Sabrina Carpenter, Charlie XCX and Chappell Roan. All of this happened because somebody said Sabrina’s video for Taste was gory and I was like huh? how? Well I fucked around and found out and my algorithm suggested Charlie and Chappell so I am slowly lifting up the rock I’ve been living under.

In other news I missed the VMA’s and the Emmy’s and I didn’t even bother to look up what happened at either show which is truly crazy for me. Kendrick dropped a song that wasn’t a Drake diss. Diddy got arrested.

This video is 2 years old but it’s one of my favorite things to watch. It was honestly my introduction to Dijon. He’s got a Shia Lebouf meets D’Angelo vibe which will make sense if you watch it. Speaking of D’Angelo

I found this video of D’Angelo being interviewed by Nelson George right before Black Messiah dropped. The sound gets weird in the middle but it’s worth suffering through.

Rob is gearing up to drop his 88 Keys assisted project. The first song shouts out Dallas Penn and the first annual Dallas Penn Family Day is on Sept 28 and you can RSVP here. Also worth noting is the Dallas Penn Storytelling Scholarship Fund at the Brooklyn Combine

This is a cool ass video. LL has been on a RUN to promote this new album. He really gave Eminem a run for his money on this song.

Kurious dropping an album on MF Doom’s label just feels right.

Homeboy Sandman’s videography is special. He has yet to drop a bad/boring video and he has a LOT of videos. This is his latest. Shouts to Amani Fela!

The only reason that I’m posting this is cus Fat Joe is rocking the babushka. I really like to wear them and I’m over here wondering if this is what I look like when I do it. It feels so cool when you have it on tho. It’s like a hoodie!

ALBUMS

Terrace Martin dropped a new album and I haven’t got to listen yet but he’s a sure shot.

I haven’t heard this yet either but I have heard (and liked) a few of the songs.

Phiik and Lungs got a new record out

MadeinTYO has been working. He just dropped off this project with Jay Worthy.

Shout out to everyone who enjoys this substack. Over the last few weeks a handful of people have told me that they read it and I’m not gonna lie it feels pretty good to hear.

Aside from enjoyability I am also always concerned about the utility of the things that I make. It’s really nice to know that this newsletter is useful and has had an impact in that way.

We are coming up on the one year mark and I think Ive found my rhythm with this thing. I am still figuring out what to do for the paid subscribers because I really like the idea of keeping this new music aspect free for folks because of it’s utility’

So maybe it’s a second article that comes out bi-weekly to give me time to write and accounts for work, life and balancing them.
