New Music Tuesday #37
The LOX at Tiny Desk, Busta Rhymes, Killer Mike and A-Trak on AOR
A lot has happened since last week. Here’s a brief recap
Elsewhere with DJ Burgerfeet was a vibe. I didn’t do as much rapping as I thought I would but I did premier The Motion (New Tanya Morgan song dropping on 8/23) and I rapped my verse as well. Hannibal’s set was pretty dope as well and I ended up doing a verse on his set as well. He played a bunch of juke, jungle, house, rap
BKYard Boogie with Nappy Nina was incredible. My hybrid interview/performance/dj set idea was a success and I’ll be repeating it sometime soon.
Here’s a video clip of us finally performing our song A-Team. You can hear the full audio from the event here. The interview/performance is the first 30 minutes and the last hour is a dj set.
But if you missed those shows you' still have a few chances to hear me spin or see me rap in the near future because I’ve got a few more gigs coming up:
8/8 - Overnight Success Comedy Show at Parkside Lounge. Julian Shapiro-Barnum and Sienna Hubert-Ross are hosting this show and there are sets by Josh Sharp, Sabrina Wu, Alex Edelman and Asha Ward. I’m holding down the afterparty as well! - TIX
8/9 - Random Jams at Aftermath. If you are in Ridgewood feel free to drop by and say hi. I’ll be on from 8pm until a little after midnight. - FREE
8/14 - Too Much Rap on East Village Radio. Episode 1! Tune in and hear it live! - 10a - 12p - LINK
8/16 - The Lift Off at Secret Pour. This is a solo rap performance with a pretty stacked line up. - TIX
I won’t be on Twitch this week but I uploaded last week’s set to my Mixcloud and it’s a pretty fun one. I did an impromptu Bill Withers tribute.
THE ALMANAC OF RAP
The Almanac of Rap has officially launched on Okayplayer’s Youtube page. It’s still on all the other streaming platforms as well. This episode features A-Trak and we talk about Canadian hip hop, Fool’s Gold records and award shows. It’s a really fun episode that is pretty informative too.
Okayplayer also wrote a whole ass article about me and the podcast too. It’s really nice to have such a big push behind the third season and I really hope you all enjoy listening to it.
VIDEOS
The LOX got behind the Tiny Desk and did some of their classics. I miss when people wanted to be in rap groups more than they wanted to be soloists.
Big Sean is gearing up for his album and dropped this pretty cool video about fatherhood.
Busta and Pharrell are back with a song that sounds like something nobody has made before which is pretty cool
Homeboy Sandman got a new video.
Doechii’s Swamp Sessions are still going.
ALBUMS
Phonte dropped Pacific Time 2 complete with limited edition vinyl.
Suprise Killer Mike album. It’s a prequel to Micheal and he did a live performance of it at Blue Note a few days ago to launch it. Here’s video from that.
Peggy dropped a new album and I haven’t had a chance to check it out. I did see a pretty interesting trailer for it the other week tho.
BADBADNOTGOOD dropped an album with some cool as cover art and guess what… I didn’t get to check it out either lol.
Moses Sumney dropped an album and while I knew who he was before the show my main memory of him is that he was on that show with The Weeknd called The Idol.
Navy Blue dropped his full length. I have not heard it.
This Meshell Ndegeocello album is inspired by the work of James Baldwin. I hear it’s pretty good.
I just found out that Tank & The Bangas are back with two new projects I bet it’s a banger.
SINGLES
BONUS
JSWISS got an album on the way soon. It features contributions from Paul Bloom, who produced most of the album, CARRTOONS, Eric Roberson, Carmen Rodgers, Sly5thAve, Michael Leonhart, Marcus Machado and more. You can pre-oder it now on BANDCAMP
