The Almanac of Rap drops this Thursday and I am very excited about it. I won’t be sending a separate email tho so make sure you are subscribed to Okayplayer’s Youtube channel or The Almanac of Rap on the streaming platform of your choice.
Tanya Morgan and 6th Sense got a new jam dropping on August 23 and you can pre-save it using this link. Have I ever told you guys how dumb of a feature I think pre-save is? I think it’s mostly because I don’t understand the function of it. Does Spotify use it internally to figure out which songs to put on editorial playlists? Is it just a random thing to build out a campaign around? I don’t know what it does but please do it and while you are at it just follow us on the streamer of your choice so that you never miss a drop.

NEWS
The Olympics are underway and this year they are taking place in Paris. I am not really into sports and I’m definitely not that patriotic but I have been poking around the dial checking them out here and there.
From the looks of things the hip hop influence is heavy this year.
Snoop Dogg carried the olympic torch which is pretty dope. Just look at that photo. In my mind he’s looking at the torch and wondering if he’ll get in trouble for using it to light a joint. Apparently he ran the 200m trail as well and made a 34.44 time. Did he make good time?
Flava Flav continues to be the most interesting man alive by sponsoring the women’s olympic water polo team. The headlines all make it seem like he is just their hype man but apparently he is funding the whole thing. I want to interview him so bad.
And lastly breakdancing is an official Olympic sport. I am going to try and tune in to watch it live but after checking the schedule I think that I have a show on the day of the event.
I can’t even lie, I think the we’re gonna get our ass kicked. Have yall seen the folks outside the US and how serious they take that shit?! Competition gonna be STEEP. I also haven’t done any research on our team at all so you should take my sports takes with a few grains of salt.
We are definitely winning the outfit competition though! They are killing that shit. I am not a fan of rocking red, white and blue but that lil bit of black sets it off. Is that a metaphor for how black people make America better? Sure. If not let’s just say it is.
De La did a pop up donut shop and I missed it. I am sad. I think I was busy or maybe that’s just a lie that I have been telling myself so that I feel better about missing it.
Q-Tip was even there! I saw Common and Questlove were both there too and I *think* De La shot a new video of some sort there for an older song. I could be wrong but If I’m right I want my credit for saying it was happening haha.
Okay let’s get on with the music
VIDEOS
Ryan Leslie showed up at NPR’s Tiny Desk and hit em with some vibes. I think at one part he actually recreated this meme.
He didn’t do my personal favorites but overall It was pretty good.
Baby Rose put out a short film. I honestly haven’t had a chance to listen to her music yet but it seems really good from the stuff I’ve skimmed.
Cam’Ron and Mase have a podcast called It Is What It Is and Cam has been using it as platform to drop these cool little freestyles before each episode.
Seeing Doechii pull together TDE’s current roster to cameo in a clip like this really makes me happy.
Not gonna lie this is one of the oddest collaborations I’ve seen in a minute. Maybe it’s just weird hearing new Will Smith but also kinda cool. Part of me is just happy the OGs are active. I also kinda like Russ.
ALBUMS
This is the instrumental version of an album that dropped in 2005.
Mustard dropped an album and I haven’t played it yet but I’m pretty sure I know what it sounds like.
This cover art got me kinda nervous. This joint is loaded down with guests too. Having X-Raided on a track is very me coded lol
I did not know that Vic Spencer was signed to Duck Down but that is pretty fire.
Muggs and Raz Fresco dropped their project and I think it’s gonna be a good listen.
Grafh raps really well.
Oh yeah and Ice Spice dropped an album so that’s probably what your kid is listening to.
SINGLES
Childish Gambino is everywhere.
New Nappy Nina! Yes yes yes….
Wayne showed out on this Cordae track
In light of the whole Drake v everybody, Premier putting Rick Ross and Lil Wayne on the same song is hilarious. Big Sean on the hook also kinda plays into the hilarity of it all.
I have yet to be let down by Rejjie Snow.
Danger Mouse and Karen O? Okay!
Flee Lord got a new album out and this is the song with Roc Marciano.
Oddisse popped up for the quick feature.
Erick the Architect been doing some cool shit lately.
New Navy Blue.
BONUS
The Homie Hayling of Colombia Nights just dropped his first remix pack and this time he took a few R&B classics to the jungle for a fun international mashup. Check it out here: DOWNLOAD
This nigga Mero is a FOOL. I laughed so hard at this.
ADDENDUM
I honestly have no idea if I’m using this word correctly and I don’t feel like looking it up so it means whatever the hell i want it to mean.
I saw a video of Flava Flav playing the piano somewhere in Paris and I'm ashamed to say that as a hiphop head I had no idea this man is a multi-instrumentalist. Layers, man. He is an icon!
