Sometimes I refrain from having my full opinion on here because I don’t know if my sense of humor will translate but this week I’m cracking the seal on the wisecracks. Just know that anything I share is something I actually have reverence and respect for even tho I probably got jokes for it as well.
Some stuff IS just for the lulz tho… but even then the curiosity about it existing is genuine.
SHOWS
LOL… I will probably be on Twitch this week. Last week I had every intention of streaming but got a last minute call for a gig. I also forgot to promote an actual IRL DJ set that I had. So yeah, Twitch from 2-4p on Weds probably?
Oh and Shouting at The Screen is July 18th at Nitehawk. Get your tickets now!
MUSIC NEWS
One thing that I watched and can’t stop raving about was this:
SWV did Tiny Desk and I want to put this performance in a frame and hang it on my wall. This was just excellent. Everything about it. The staging, the narration, the way they moved through the set. The actual set. I could go on and on cus this is of of my favorite groups of all time but I’ll stop here and just implore you to check out their episode of Unsung (if you can find it) to find out just how crazy their story is. For fans of messy reality TV they’ve got a show with Xscape and it gets very messy (but not on the SWV side).
Fun Fact: Weak was meant for Charlie Wilson but he turned it down.
OMA is quickly becoming one of my favorite hip hop adjacent bands and it’s because of stuff like this. Shout out to Hiero. Getting to go on tour with them was such an incredible experience.
VIDEOS
If I’m being completely honest I was kinda scared after that last single but this one has me right back to excited. Common sounds rejuvenated, Pete sounds like he back in the basement and he even gave us a classic interlude beat. The video also looks really cool.
Aside from the fact that he’s from ATL and mainly raps over uptempo dancey shit, I don’t know much about Nick Grant. One day that will change but until then I am just happy somebody keeping that dance rap pocket alive.
I’m in this video! First person to post a screen grab of my face wins a shout out next week haha. The song is dope but you already knew that cus it’s Homeboy Sandman.
This is a group named Michelle which is pretty ground breaking if you ask me. The music is fun too. I wonder if they are all named Michelle. Probably not but worth asking.
Teezo took the nails out his head for this one. I like him and I like this song. I think Lyrical Lemonade is handling the music videos for Despicable Me 4 which is WILD to me but I guess it makes sense with Cole Bennett being a video director and all. But still feels like If they let Nahright handle the music videos for Inside Out 2 or some shit.
Speaking of Common (lol) Tiffany Haddish did a bunch of songs with Diane Warren and this is one of them. She’s apparently making her own music to use in her projects now and I find that pretty ‘interesting’.
ALBUMS
This was actually a pretty big week for releases.
Camila Cabello’s album is out and it has a Jamaican Drake feature. Apparently I had no idea what her voice sounded like cus I fa sho didn’t think it sounded like this.
Megan The Stallion got Big KRIT and UGK on her album. I like her as a rapper and I like how she moving these days (no pun intended). Stadium tours as an indie is dope.
Yachty and James Blake have a whole album together which explains the press that they’ve been doing together. I haven’t hit play but I bet It’s gonna be ambient 2 step with ethereal wailing and autotune warbling.
FUCKING FINALLY. This is an event album for me. I loved their last album so much and all the stuff I have heard from this signal I’ll be equally happy with this.
Something made me click Mumble Rap first and that made me want to listen to the whole album. Apparently the whole album is based around the question “what if Amy Winehouse was a battle rapper” which is such a wild angle.
Mike, Dave and STILL RIFT put out a long player that is sure to inspire me to finally finish my album (or maybe scrap it and start over, we’ll see!)
My homegirl sent me this and said “it’s like Odd Future meets Lucy Pearl” which is seemed pretty accurate after I skimmed it.
Home is a vocal ensemble which is basically a secular choir. That is fascinating to me and they have Madison McFerrin and Theo Croker on the album so I’m gonna listen. The idea of a vocal ensemble is really intriguing to me. I would love to find one that is here in Brooklyn.
I haven’t hit play but I am pretty sure I know what it sounds like and I yall ready to dance.
Dunno what this album sounds like yet but it’s probably gonna be good cus it’s Lucky Daye. I don’t know if this analogy works but in my mind Lucky Day is to Frank Ocean what Musiq Soulchild is to D’Angelo. They have a similar vocal tone but I’m mostly talking about artist output.
Somebody said Dr Dre told Marsha to sing over Illmatic which intrigued me and after I skimmed I decided that she heard Nicole Bus and said ‘hold my beer’ and the called an orchestra. She’s such an incredible singer and this is the perfect showcase for her talent.
SINGLES
Blxst and Andy linked up for a fun joint.
Nappy Nina and Swarvy bout to make an incredible album.
Dunno who D. Hall is but this is a cool song.
Spotify does this thing where it allows you to bundle singles into a maxi single and I think I have slept on what Jillian has been doing so here are her latest three. Love Takeover is the latest.
Louie Vega put a lil sauce on my favorite Jose James song. If I was still into doing piracy remixes I’d add a verse or something.
BONUS
Mero never left but he is finally back to the clip show format and I for one am ecstatic about it. The cultural commentary we deserve is here!
A Brainorchestra produced spoken word album? Yup! I’ve known Madi for a while now and she’s been sharp with the pen so this team up makes infinite sense. It’s only available on BANDCAMP
Neon Brown got an album with a guy named PUTE. I asked Neon who PUTE is and he didn’t give me much info and even went as far as saying he doesn’t have social media but I dig NB’s music so I think this will be good. You can get the vinyl on BANDCAMP
ADDENDUM
I think that’s it, see you guys next week.
