Last week was equal parts crazy, hectic and awesome and here is a very brief recap:
The Tanya Morgan reunion show finally happened and I’m still going through all of the images and emotions left over from the show. Seeing so many homies pull to celebrate Brooklynati with us was truly overwhelming in the best way possible.
Last Tuesday was also my birthday so in a weird way the show felt like a birthday party for me as well as Brooklynati. I also feel like I missed the opportunity to ask you guys to consider subscribing to the newsletter as a gift to me but there’s always this week!
MUSIC NEWS
Uh… shit. I do not know. Today I saw a thing where Funkmaster Flex was dissing Million Dollar Baby while playing it on the air which is dumb because regardless to his feelings about the record he still has to play it. I feel like he Funk Flex does something in this vein at least once every 2-3 years. It’s kinda his brand and it usually helps the artist more than it hurts them so all is well.
Between Radio City with Michelle and C’mon Everybody with Tanya I have been tapped out of what’s going on in music. I don’t even know if they still talking about Kenny vs Drizzy anymore. I feel free. I guess ignorance truly is bliss.
In other music related news I am pretty sure that when Rapsody dropped ‘Please Don’t Cry’ it made me remember ‘Baby Don’t Cry’ by Lalah Hathaway and since earworms only go away when you pass them along I am posting the music video here for you to see.
The video is dripping with 90s nostalgia including dance moves, baggy suits and a set that looked like the background from the T.E.V.I.N. album cover photo shoot.
That earworm lead me further down the rabbit hole of ‘GOAT Vocalists’ and I found this video of Lalah Hathaway, Rachelle Ferrell and Anita Baker on stage performing which blew my mind.
Rachelle’s is absolutely insane vocally. It feels like watching a magic trick or tasting some amazing food for the first time. You know you have never experienced anything like it before and chances are you won’t ever see it again.
Okay on to the new music.
VIDEOS
Chaka Khan’s tiny desk drops at noon today so it might be live by the time you read this! I love Tiny Desk. Tierra Whack just did it a few days ago too.
Lalah actually has an album on the way and her latest single has a video so here it goes.
This cat LOX is crazy on the drums and here’s an 18 minute set of him and his band just tearing through a few jams. (Jazz Re:freshed is so dope.)
Rapsody hit up COLORS to do one of my favorite songs off of her album. Colors is another dope platform. Man, the UK got all the fly shit.
Lupe got another new video. You can always expect some top tier barwork form him.
I must have forgotten that Problem changed. his name to Jason Martin but this new song is sure to make me remember.
Freeway and Jake One are doubling back and they brought Jadakiss along for the ride.
LaRussell is a case study in having fun and doing cool ass random shit. Remaking Flipside as a bay area banger and keeping Freeway and Peedi on it? Man, I never saw that coming.
The Dogg Pound put out an excellent album last week and I can’t stress enough that you check it out if you are into their stuff.
Dunno who Frak is but he’s trading bars with Del over Hiatus’ Kaiyote’s Red Room and I am not mad at it.
ALBUMS
Kaytranada does not miss and I shouldn’t have to convince you to listen to this one but if you need some coercing Witchy and Drip Sweat are bangers.
I just found out that Open Mike Eagle dropped a new project and while I haven’t heard it yet I’m sure it’s some high quality rap shit.
I just found out about this ShrapKnel album as well and I haven’t heard this one either but it’s gonna be good, trust me.
Tems got a new album. J Cole is on it.
SINGLES
Here are some songs that I think are cool.
ADDENDUM
I think that’s it. Any questions?
