I’ll be on Twitch February 21 (tomorrow) from 2p - 4p est (or later) and you can watch that here. I’m over there evrery Weds now.
Apologies in advance for all of the Youtube links! There were even more that I didn’t inlcude!
Youtube has been trying to get me to watch Louis Cole videos. Based on the style of his videos I’m pretty sure I have heard him before. They look primed for virality in a way that makes me wonder if he’s just leveraging internet humor or if it’s just flat out musical comedy. Regardless I finally gave in and watched this one.
Apparently Youtube’s algorithm knows me pretty well because this ticks several of my boxes. I’m also pretty sure that’s Amber Navran playing flute in the video which makes me like it even more.
From there I found out about his side project called Knower which is fronted by him and a woman named Genevieve Artadi. They have a similar style tongue in cheek songs with videos shot in the same house.
I haven’t really done much research on the band yet but based on Amber playing flute in not one but two videos I am willing to bet that they are all equally dope on their own.
All of this stuff reminds me of the first time I heard Wallpaper about 15 years ago. I was spending a lot of time out in the bay and the homie Dom was working with a band called Grillade who consisted of Ragen Fykes and The Park (Derek Taylor, Josh Lippi, Ben Schwier and Nate Mercereau… I think I got everybody).
We even ended up in one of their videos!
If I’m not mistaken those guys were friends with Wallpaper who had an album out at the time called DooDoo Face and that album rocked my world. I still go back to it at every few months. It was funny, funky, had chord changes and bridges and shit. Emphatically yes!
Long story short I ended up getting him and The Park for my Love Junkie remix and it is still such a monster jam.
And if you’re wondering where The Park and Wallpaper are today. The Park backs Alice Russell, Josh plays with Tommy Guerro, Nate plays with Andre 3000, Derek plays with everybody and they all have their own bands as well. Wallpaper became Ricky Reed (which is just his real name) and is Lizzo’s main producer.
Not bad huh?
The Park even dropped a project in December of last year
In other news yall remember Donnie?
I was playing his album The Colored Section and raving about it via text with the few ppl who I knew would appreciate me bringing it back to the discourse. The
I wandered over to Youtube to see if I he ever did any music videos and while I didn’t find any I did find this newish song!
And in the description for that video is a link to an album that is no longer on streaming but IS on Bandcamp and released on 2007. So while it’s very old it’s still kinda new. I don’t know if you guys are Donnie fans but if you are partake:
But enough about 16 year old music that is new to me. Here is some actual new music from the last week. There’s a new Dua Lipa song out that I like but I’m not gonna share it because I think she is doin just fine w/out my newsletter haha.
Another week, another new Blue song.
Groovy and vibey.
Been following her since she got kicked off Rhythm + Flow. She was too good for that show!
Saw this cat at Winter Music Festival and it’s been a long time since I saw a live show and felt like I was seeing something new.
Finally an actual Buddy song and not a person tagging him on a random song that he’s not on.
New Ryan Leslie!? Did he ever find that stolen laptop?
Willie is such a compelling rapper. Voice, rhyme patterns, production. Yeah man. get into it.
This album features Kooley High, Pink Siifu, Quelle Chris and Lil B? Okay Ol’Burger Beats, I’m interested.
Look at that cover art! You know this is gonna be a wild ride!
I played this album a few times and really enjoyed it.
Great post! FYI: Ricky Reed is actually his stage name, even back to Wallpaper., which was the band. Love seeing him pop up here! They did some of my favorite concerts ever.
